But Can You Fly?
This is a story about flying… not in the literal sense as you may think, but rather, it is a story about metaphors. What images do the word “flying” bring up for you? Spreading your wings? Letting go? Reaching new heights? Soaring amongst the clouds? All are metaphors.
Dedicated to all of the beautiful Tribemates and Sherpas who walk this life-path with me. May we never be above nor below one another... but always beside. Thank you
How This Metaphor Began
One weekend I was driving to a small town, 45 km north of where I live, to visit a sister Tribemate and Sherpa. We were getting together to catch up, nibble on some healthy snacks and to share our intentions for the Summer Solstice. On the way I noticed that I was feeling nervous. The highway was calm considering it was Father’s Day Weekend. Why then did I feel nervous? I realized it was because the highway is a major route between the Island and Vancouver, BC. Summer season is usually congested with holiday travellers, RV'rs and truckers heading for destinations on roads unfamiliar to them. Many accidents occur on this particular stretch of highway - some of them fatal.

I began to remind myself to relax and enjoy the scenic beauty of the drive. I have driven this highway numerous times without incident. In fact, I have experienced only two accidents in the last 20 years of living on the Island and neither were my “fault”. (I don’t really believe in fault since I know that we are always in the right place in the right time for our life experiences and lessons.)

"OK", I chided myself. "Why is it that you feel so nervous? You are a good driver. You have great driving record, a safe, modern vehicle and the brakes were just done. Yes, I’m a great driver! I am OK on this highway! Without warning a thought popped into my mind, “You are indeed a great driver, Gwendolyna! But, can you fly?”

Can I fly? What did it mean? I have flown all over the world. Soared in a glider. Zip-lined and bungee-jumped over a river canyon. A hot-air-balloon ride is on my bucket list. But can “I” fly? What could this mean? This is a story about metaphors, after-all, and this question haunted me.

I was mulling this over as I arrived at my friend’s tiny-house. She had prepared a beautiful lunch. As we nibbled and chatted I told her about my epiphany while travelling on the highway. We both agreed that it was indeed a metaphor and perfect timing for the vision-quest that we were embarking on that afternoon.

Fast forward a couple of days. I had just completed a walk along our beautiful waterfront. The sun had poked out after several cloudy days and I was feeling sun-kissed, blessed and peaceful. As I returned to my car I noticed a tiny white feather on its bumper.

Hmmmm, I thought. I wonder what this means? I took a picture of it and tucked it away. I forgot about the feather until later that night as I drifted off to sleep: “But can you fly?”

The question whirled around in my head, relentlessly, until I remembered the tiny white feather I had found on the bumper of my car. A message from the heavens? Perhaps. Maybe I can fly. Maybe I already am.

But can you fly?
