What Do You Really Want?
Several years ago my coaching teacher instructed us to draw a picture of what we wanted to create in our lives. There was no way I was going to draw a picture! My artistic skills were rather humble, to say the least - akin to stick figures. To make matters worse, the woman beside me appeared to be a gifted artist who effortlessly rendered one masterpiece after another while doodling away during the theory part of the class.
"Can I write it down instead?" I asked. The long answer was something about the act of drawing being important to connecting to the "other side” of our brain in order to tap in to our creative potential. The short answer was "draw the picture, Gwen!" Reluctantly, I drew quite a lovely one in my opinion. It was a picture Mother Earth radiating golden violet light with a network of praying hands surrounding her. The caption I gave it was "Peace on Earth". |
"Besides peace on earth, what do you really want?" my teacher inquired. "Without peace on earth we have nothing" I answered loftily. My teacher reminded me that if I waited until we had attained peace on earth to create my own dreams I would have exactly that, nothing.
Back to the drawing board I went. This time I drew the thing that I really wanted - to own my own home. At the time I was renting a 700 sq. ft. condo with my partner. We had two cats and our two home-based businesses. "Wouldn't it be great to have a bigger space that was our own?" we often mused. The housing market was raging and our musings seemed to be a pipe dream and nothing we could ever really attain. So, I drew a house with the proverbial "white picket fence", "two cats in the yard" and threw in a pink flowering tree for good measure. I added a view of the ocean and the mountains and voila - my picture was complete! The coaching course ended with my freshly-minted coaching certification in hand and my assignments neatly stowed on the shelf. |
A couple of years later I was coaching a client and needed some ideas to help inspire her to create her dreams. "Aha!" I thought. How about that visioning exercise we did in coaching class where I had to draw a picture of my dream? How did it go again?" Something about envisioning what I truly wanted and then drawing what it would look like once I attained it. With a bit of digging, I found the assignment with my pictures in all of their glory - one of world peace and the other of the house I had so badly wanted.
What a surprise to see that my picture of the house I had drawn replicated the one we purchased less than two years later! Right down to the colour of the siding, white picket fence, peak-a-view ocean and mountain views, and the pièce-de-résistance... a magnificent magnolia tree with deep pink blossoms. Oh, did I mention two cats in the yard - yes, we brought those with us. I could not believe my eyes! How truly powerful creative visualization is. I have used this exercise many times over the years and it has always worked for me in manifesting my dreams -whether I write down my dreams and goals or use a vision board. Now, about world peace... that might take a bit longer. What do you think? |
